We had named this adventure Queenstown to Cape Town (for obvious reasons). With this interim adventure around the Black Sea becoming the primary focus and the fact that our adventuring was now more than QT2CT alone, we decided we needed a more generic name that encapsulated what we are about.
We wanted something that encapsulated the adventuring spirit, was and wasn’t too focused on bikes alone, had a bit of wit to it, satisfied all of our different opinions, shared our dreams and aspirations and wasn’t too cliche/kitschy/lame – so really quite a simple task ?
We ummmed and ahhhed and couldn’t really get our creative juices going. We had lots of other things to be busy with so it kind of took a back seat for while.
We finally got the ball rolling and started throwing around a bunch of ideas on Whatsapp, some serious and a lot not so much, but hadn’t hit something until we had a Skype a couple of weeks ago.
We knew we needed a name so we could start sharing out the adventure Facebook page. So we got down to the business of being creative, not an an easy task.
We discussed a bunch of different ideas but weren’t making much progress and then out of nowhere Sam threw out Sprit Adventures, Sprit being German for fuel/gas. It didn’t even have any relevance to what we were discussing before that.
And with a bit more inspiration I threw out Grit and Sprit Adventures. Grit being the gravel roads we’ll be looking for and the grit required to pull off a huge adventure.
It had links to bikes via grit roads and gas, it had other meanings in the grit and spirit needed for big adventure, it incorporated the comradery of mates celebrating the adventure with a drink and it had links to German which has significance for both Sam and Steve. We thought we liked it but didn’t want to make a decision right there and then so we slept on it.
The next few days rolled by as we also spent time on other things, but whenever we came back to Grit and Sprit Adventures we felt that we’d hit the new name of our adventure series.
And as an unplanned bonus the acronym ends up being GAS Adventures – was it meant to be??
So here we are – Grit and Sprit Adventures – welcome to the world!
