Heidenau K60 Scout

Howdy Adventurer’s

This is my first tyre review.

I’m lazy when it comes to changing my tyres all the time. I want to mount the tyres and ride them until they are worn out or I need new tyres for the next trip. That said there is nothing more frustrating than not being able to ride something because the tyres are not up to it. I want a tyre that will cope with everything that I throw at it…………….!

So, the Heidenau K60 Scout.

I did two trips with these tyres:

The first trip was through Italy, then a ferry to Greece and on to Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria. We rode everything from motorways to single trails. The K60 was generally not bad & coped with all sorts of terrain. This trip was mostly hot and dry conditions, and the K60s worked okay. I didn’t  really notice any significant issues.

The second trip was from Austria, through Hungary, Romania & back.
Again this was very diverse trip, with motorways, back roads, bush tracks & alpine areas. The conditions were cooler and wetter, with river crossings, mud, gravel, rocks, alpine grasses & snow.

For the front, a big draw back is the roundness of the K60 tyre. This is a big problems on wet sloping ground. The front would just break traction and slide downhill. Not very nice at all.

The rear has similar wet related problems. It actually really struggles to get good traction on dry grass, so you can imagine what it’s like on wet grass. For off road riding the continuous strip in the centre of the rear tyre is a problem too.

I don’t try to ride as fast in the wet as I would in the dry, but on a wet road I found the K60 tyres to be a confidence killer. I felt like I was never sure if they would hold or just slide out on you. It was not fun at all!

Summary:
Pro’s
Long life, work well in most dry conditions.

Con’s
Not good on the dry grass, not good in mud, not good in snow and slippery on a wet road. Also, the tread on front tyre is too rounded for crossing wet sloping ground.

In the end everyone has to decide what they want out of a tyre. For me it is clear, they just don’t suit me and where I want to be able to ride.
